Another side benefit to Houston's low cost of living: the "upscale" prostitutes started at only $300 an hour! Compare that to the prices being paid in New York by the likes of Eliot Spitzer, and then try telling me that Houston and the lone star state aren't great places to work (on your back).

Twitter is a vast fucking wasteland of idiocy. It encourages frequent updates of the most mundane sort (take a look at your livejournal friends and you'll see what I mean.) The 140 (or whatever) character limit means it's almost impossible to communicate a developed thought. Twitter is like a junior high lunch room conversation on meth. I think you can write some good stuff but it's not going to be on Twitter and I'd encourage you not to join it.

"Wow Nath. Do you have any idea how shrill and dismissive you come across here?"

Absolutely.

A man of your intellect and passions has no business taking soft stances. Voltaire called you out long ago.

More later.

Wow Nath. Do you have any idea how shrill and dismissive you come across here? I'm "trite" with regard to my second point, and I'm "wrong" about something I'm not enough fucking asserting in the third paragraph?

Obama's and the Dems solution to the economy is to borrow and spend money we don't have on a whole slew of non-capital related projects, to increase the budget deficit as a % of GDP to the highest level since WWII, and to tax energy like it's going out of style. Hate the Republicans all you like. That doesn't mean the Democrats are doing the right thing with respect to the economy. Checking the excesses of the free market through regulation and transparency is good. Taxing the ever loving crap out of everything is not the solution to an economic crisis, however.

P1: The Democrats reached out to the Republicans on this bill. The Republicans bitched and complained for concessions. They got some of them (of course, the programs that got cut are the sort of genuinely useful yet politically expedient social issues the Republicans like to use to whip their religious base into a fervor). And guess what? Not a single vote for the bill.

P2: Massive deregulation and purposely bankrupting the government, that's how. Your statements are trite and do not reflect the reality of the damage the last eight years have done to our country. Fact: in our lifetimes, every Republican administration has been marked by unnecessary war and massive deficits (and now, two recessions). The only Democratic administration was marked by peace and prosperity. Believe it or not, the decisions made in government make a difference.

P3: You're wrong. He's saying, "We tried to work with them on this, and they refused. We don't have to try to work with them anymore." And nor should they-- the people don't want them to; the Republicans' ideas have failed, and even the general populace sees that. The Republicans are still playing politics while we have real problems to solve. Frankly, I think most of them are trying to hold back the stimulus in hopes that the economy continues to tank and they win some seats back in the midterms.

I'll just briefly point out a couple things. Who wrote the "stimulus" bill? House Democrats, mostly (Pelosi, et al.) So, if the authors of the bill got ZERO Republican support, that probably means a) they don't want Republican support and/or b) they don't care. While I know party bloc voting does sometimes happen, I'm sure if a true "bipartisan effort" had occurred, some repub votes would have been garnered. W/e, because yes, the Dems control both houses and the presidency, so they can pretty much do what they want (in theory.) Btw, Obama may truly have a bipartisan spirit, but interjecting that into the hardened politics of the US House is a tough sell.

The Bush administration by and large was crappy. The economy now sucks. But economies go in cycles, and I haven't heard any coherent criticism that would explain how Bush/Repubs CAUSED the current economic downturn. In general, political parties and ESPECIALLY Presidents get too much credit for a good economy, and too much blame for a bad one.

"I don’t think the onus is on us. We tried. The story is they failed." This Emanuel quote is frankly quite alarming to me. It sounds like he's saying "the Republicans broke the economy, and because we rushed through a stimulus bill [that won't work, or won't have a big enough effect to really do anything], you can't hold us responsible." Feel free to tell me if you think he's saying something different.

Wow that wasn't brief at all. Ok back to work.

Thanks! That's really amazing that it's worked so well for you. I'm happy for you, and it gives me hope.

I just think that so much about the ways in which we traditionally consider love and sex, in the ways we're conditioned to think about relationships, involves so much taking, so much selfishness. All taking and no giving. The trope that men have to trick women to "get some".
It's like we're trained to accept unfulfillment and discontent, taught that love only exists in fiction, that there's just no time for it here. That we all have to be grouchy and dysfunctional and neutered.

But there's so much possibility, so much sheer joy, in the romance of a real love, in the depths you can find in someone, and when you open yourself up to more people in that way, it's exponential... the degree to which one can love and be loved in this life is incredible, I feel, and I'm learning, doing my best, digging deeper and deeper...
